The word "nostalgia" described a condition of American Civil War soldiers that today we might label battle
fatigue or post-traumatic stress disorder. Nostalgia also means homesickness or a wistful longing for the
past--often an idealized one.
When writing about the 19th century South, I have no illusions about the good-ole-days, which never existed.
The era and landscape that call to me were rife with contradiction and conflict. My nostalgia is a longing, not
for the past, but for an understanding of the past.
Below are links to some of my favorite places for research and inspiration, where I've found pieces of my stories.
